Dog racing is a sport run by greyhounds. The dogs chase a mechanical lure,
which is called a hare. Starting about half a circuit behind the start, when
it passes near the starting traps, it automatically triggers the gate and
releases the greyhounds. If the dogs catch or overtake the lure, the race
is declared void.

This breed of dog is believed to have originated in Egypt where they have remained practically unchanged in appearance since the time of Christ maybe even longer. The Greyhound was used to chase after rabbits, hares, leopard and gazelle. They are a sighthound. Around 1836, racing Greyhounds started in England, and is still continued today. There are more Greyhounds running
on the track than there are Greyhounds kept as family pets.
Greyhounds take great thrill in the chase, normally docile creatures, they become excited when racing, and there are times when a dog may turn its head aggressively on another runner. For this reason dogs wear muzzles when racing.
Grass used to be the normal surface for running greyhounds, it looked good and provided fast races. It was too difficult and expensive to maintain, especially during the winter to sand is now the popular choice.
